About the event

This five-hour workshop introduces Itajime Shibori, a Japanese method of creating patterns in dyeing. The first part of the workshop will focus on the art and craft of natural dyeing. Participants will become familiar with the preparation of the fiber through the scouring and mordanting processes. They will learn how to extract colors from selected regional materials and prepare a dye bath. This practical introduction to natural dyes will be put into practice with Itajime style pattern making. Itajime Shibori is a shaped-resist technique. It uses folded fabric and pieces of wood, which are held in place with clamps. The shapes prevent the dye from penetrating the fabric they cover. As a result, different folds sandwiched between different shapes can create hundreds of different patterns. The dyes can also be layered on top of each other to create a beautiful array of pattern and color. Participants will explore these possibilities and decorate a set of 100% organic cotton napkins that they will bring home.

All the materials including a handout with step-by-step explanations and a list of supplies for future reference are provided.
